Performance Review
The Review is due the FIRST TUESDAY AFTER THE SHOW CLOSES. The review should be at least one full page (typed) and contain the following information:
1. What is the play and who is the playwright? What was the play about (not plot, but theme)? How do you feel about the quality of the writing?
2. Who was the director? What is their interpretation? How did the interpretation support or conflict with the theme?
3. Was the director successful in telling the story and conveying the writer’s themes? Give at least two specific examples to support your argument.
4. How did each of the technical elements (Set, Costumes, Lighting and Music) try to support the theme and/or director’s interpretation? Please give specific examples for each element to support your argument.
5. Choose two actors and tell me how each of their performances helped or hindered in telling the story and conveying the writer’s themes.
Give at least two specific examples for each actor.
6. What was your visceral, gut-level reaction to the play? Give specific reasons why you feel you had this reaction.
What is something you would have liked to see the writer, director, or actors do that they could have made your reaction either stronger or more favorable?
A good review will answer all of these questions and more. Remember it is not a book report telling about the plot or a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. Instead, try and look at the production and performances with a critical eye, trying to be aware of what the artists are attempting and specifically letting the reader know if and why were they successful or not.
